Like You Do

We
get to slum
along,
with
wide eyes,
and closed
lips,
like a good wind
does
after
she’s
given way to
an
even less
worn out
day.

We
also get
to fall
deeper
and deeper
into a world
of make-believe,
and
pirate ships
that sail
to and fro,
like a
feather does
when she’s
just
plain tired
of being too
plain
tired.

What
this poet means
to
say
is
that
you give too
much
of yourself
to us,
and when
the
time comes,
and
just like you
do,
I’m
gonna draw
up
these curtains
to
soak
in all
of your
beauty.

Musicology

Whole
notes
dangle,
and find
their
place in the middle
of
soft chords.
They linger,
allow
a flex of tone,
and give
way to
the staccato
of eighth notes,
as
they stammer
their
way
into the elusive
beat.
We
get to
passively
fixate in this
dance,
following cadence
into
more stanzas,
with
syllables
filled with
delicate notes.

We’re
musical
in this sense,
and ever so
patiently
waiting
for the cadenza
to
hold
us
to
the very
last
note.
