Moon Pies
August 18, 2007
A moon pie or MoonPie® is a pastry invented around 1917. A MoonPie consists of two graham crackers shaped into round cookies, with marshmallow filling in the center. The confection is then dipped in chocolate (or other flavors). In the past 10 years, a mini MoonPie has been developed, about half the size of the earlier moon pies.
I really never thought about Moon Pies until I was way into my early twenties. In fact, Moon Pies didn’t make a serious impact on my life until I went home one summer week-end and found myself in Charlotte, NC getting gas when lo and behold, I saw a Moon Pie staring at me on the shelf.
Of course, I smiled.
Then I bought it.
Off to Greenville, SC (1 hour away) and for the first half of that trip, I enjoyed small remnants of history and memories of my childhood reaching back. My grandmother used to buy me Moon Pies whenever I had been a “good” boy and since my grandmother has passed away a few years prior, I felt like sharing a Moon Pie with my grandmother. It was a peaceful moment for us and I think she took too much when she tried to split it in two but then again, she always did it that way. Moon Pies are filled with marshmallows and are rich with sugary things that only nutritions really care about. In either case, every once in a while I’ll eat a Moon Pie but now I buy an extra one for the woman who made the importance of the Moon Pie and intimate one.
So, if you ever want to reach back to your highest point in life, eat a Moon Pie because if anything, you’ll forget everything that matters, but only for the time it takes you to enjoy the intimacy with a sugary thing that only nutritionists care about. Be sure to share because some of the best things in life only come when shared and broken into smaller pieces for all to enjoy.
